Hi Joe!
I am a 30 year old African-American woman who was diagnosed with colon cancer two years ago. I had a tumor and a portion of my colon removed at that time. The surgeon was able to get everything, thank goodness. I want to know how to combat the bloating that I have in my stomach. There are days when I look like I am six months pregnant! I never had major surgery like that before and it was a jolt to my body like you would not believe. I was sedentary before the surgery…only walking occasionally. Since the surgery, it has taken a while for me and my body to bounce back. Now, I weigh about 195 pounds and want to lose about 50 pounds. I have started to exercise regularly, but I don’t know what to eat. Can you help me?
As for your dietary needs after surgery, did you meet with any dietitians who helped you discover what you could eat that took into considering your colon surgery? If not, I suggest you ask your doctor about this. odds are your insurance will cover meetings with registered dietitians (RDs) who can advise you best on what to eat etc. You can find a list of RDs in your area at their website EatRight.org just put your zip code in and they will show up. I really think that is the best course of action. I think they would be able to give you much more precise information on dietary needs after colon surgery – and tackle the bloating question – than I could. I could make some recommendations but they can do it much better and I think thats really what you need more than anything. If you have any questions about exercise let me know. That I am very qualified to help you with.

Hi Lynn, very glad you are doing ok after your surgery! The first thing to know is that exercise has been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer and even help keep it from returning here is a link to an article you may like to read http://www.webmd.com/colorectal-cancer/guide/20061101/exercise-boosts-colon-cancer-survival
